The Retreat that Wasn’t (But Kinda Was)
I had been so looking forward to CMMR’s Holy Cross retreat; for three years I spent every Friday there, worshipping, eating, and laughing with the monks. I was even married there! And even though several of the monks I was close to have died, and my own spiritual director left for another monastic community, Holy Cross will forever hold a special place in my heart.
New Issue of SuperFlumina!
This new issue of SuperFlumina is the first issue of a second volume—a soft reboot, one might say—which has a number of the features found in the earlier version (the Abbot’s Rant, a Monastery Meditation, poetry, and calendar notes), but has added a substantial featured interview—this issue with Brother James Dowd, OSB, founder of Incarnation Monastery and the Benedictine Service Corps, as well as a refreshed look and feel.
Letter from Joey
I would like to thank the Community of Mary Mother of the Redeemer for allowing me to be a part of what God is doing through them for the last several years…
The Habit Makes the Monk
I’m a monastic, living in an Abbey that is also the rectory of a church. I wear a habit six days a week; sometimes I change out of it when I leave the house, but sometimes I keep it on. It’s a symbol of who I am, or, more truthfully, who I want to be.
Friends, Hospitality, and the Future of Guests at the Abbey
The Rule of Community of Mary, Mother of the Redeemer says, “A Community House without guests is like a chapel without the Reserved Sacrament.”
Monastic Living in Ordinary Time
We are in the season after Pentecost, affectionately (and by some people not so affectionately) referred to as “Ordinary Time”. This season takes up quite a bit of our liturgical calendar and yet it doesn’t really get its due in my opinion. I happen to love Ordinary Time.
First Impressions
I confess. I’ve spent a lot of time as a monastic guest, and I’ve loved every minute of it. Hearing the sound of the bells calling me to chapel four to seven times a day (depending on the monastery) filled me with inexplicable joy, and the time spent chanting each Office was sacred time permeated with God in a way I hadn’t experienced before. But I wasn’t sure how that would translate when it became my everyday life.
