The Abbey of Mary, Mother of the Redeemer

The Community of Mary, Mother of the Redeemer lives at the Abbey of Mary, Mother of the Redeemer in Michigan City, Indiana.

In December of 2020, the Right Reverend Douglas E. Sparks, bishop of the Diocese of Northern Indiana, graciously invited the Community of Mary, Mother of the Redeemer and the leadership and people of Trinity Episcopal Church in Michigan City to enter into a period of discernment about the possibility of entering into an experiment in shared ministry.

At the end of May of 2021, CMMR moved into the Rectory of Trinity Church (which had once been a bishop’s residence, when Trinity had been the Cathedral of the diocese) and renamed it the Abbey of Mary, Mother of the Redeemer.

At the Abbey, CMMR shares worship, meals, life, and work in service to the Kingdom of God, with responsibility for these rotating on a regular basis by each Sister and Brother. We are still becoming established at the Abbey, but we look forward to a robust ministry of hospitality and retreats in the near future. Until then, we welcome you to worship with us whenever you are able.

The Horarium of the Abbey

All are welcome to worship in Intercession Chapel at the Abbey of Mary, Mother of the Redeemer. There is, however, a character to monastic worship that we ask you to help us maintain. We try to cultivate silence in our worship via pace (which is intentionally unhurried), volume (which is much quieter than that found in most congregations), and actual silence (which is relatively frequent and can be long). You can assist us best by trying to follow our pace and volume and by observing silences with us. It may be helpful if you listen quietly for a while before you join your voice to ours.
