Learning to Sing the Lord’s Song in a Strange Land

Look to Mary, Mother of the Redeemer, Sisters and Brothers. She is for you not the great exception, but the great example.

--From the Rule of the Community of Mary, Mother of the Redeemer (Chapter 8)

He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.

From the Song of Mary (Luke 1:51-53)

Throughout the history of the Church

in times of declining (even nominally Christian) Empire, God calls traditional monastic and other (even new, emerging) forms of religious life to remind the Church of her roots as as a community that puts love of God, each other, and God’s creation before the accumulation of wealth, power, and security.

Convinced of that special role of monastic and other religious communities

the Community of Mary, Mother of the Redeemer find ourselves asking questions like:

What if

  • all the suffering, violence, and oppression in the world isn’t “just the way it is,” or the way it has to be, but is an aberration—an intrusion—into Creation, and it CAN be and even now IS being overcome?

  • the deepest Truth was a community of non-violent, self-giving LOVE… and what if you could begin to live within the life of that Truth and share that reality right now?

  • you could live such a life with a community of Sisters and Brothers who promise to love you and live into that life with you forever?

“God wants to draw us together so that we may be one, as God, who is Three Persons, is also One God.”
